When we look at the letter to the Ephesians from the perspective of church history, we see that the loss of first love became common in churches after the apostles died. This period of church history, from 70 A.D. (when the temple in Jerusalem was destroyed) to around 160 A.D. (the middle of the 2nd century), shows how churches started drifting away from their warm, loving, and compassionate mission Guided Ephesus Tours.
A Shift from Love to Formality
In the early church, believers were filled with love and compassion for the world. But as time passed, churches became more focused on arguments about teachings and doctrines. The church’s energy shifted from caring for others to arguing over beliefs. The churches became more formal, moral, and routine, losing the warmth and love they once had.
This same problem still exists in many churches today. People drift away from a close relationship with Jesus and become more focused on rules, debates, and human efforts Jesus’ Message to the Ephesians: Hating Evil Practices.
Jesus’ Appeal and Promise
In verse 7, we see Jesus’ appeal to the church and the promise he offers:
“He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches. To him who overcomes, I will give the right to eat from the tree of life, which is in the paradise of God.” (Revelation 2:7 NIV)
Listening to Jesus’ Words
Jesus calls for those who are willing to listen to his words: “He who has an ear, let him hear.” This means, “If you’re ready to listen, pay attention to what I’m saying.” The question is: Do you have an ear to hear what Jesus is telling you? Are you ready to listen and follow his instructions?
The Promise to Overcomers
Jesus promises that to those who overcome, he will give the right to eat from the tree of life, which is in the paradise of God. This is a promise of eternal life and fellowship with God for those who remain faithful and return to their first love.
In summary, Jesus is calling the church to listen, repent, and return to a loving relationship with Him, promising eternal rewards for those who do.
